We went to Notre Dame with a simple plan of picnicking there and enjoying the gigantic structure as it lit up. It turns out a "secret" event was taking place outdoors. We observed hundreds of people dress in all white sitting down on white chairs enjoying a nice dinner with wine. There were white tables, white tablecloths, white candles. No one knew what was going on. At least, not the ones that we talked to. There were even people asking us about the event and we told them we were clueless as they were. Finally around midnight I was able to approach an English-speaking French woman who was part of the event and she was kind enough to explain things to me. According to her, they do this every year but at a different location each time. There is no exact date. It's done in the summertime and dependant on the weather of that night. Hours before
the event, the participants all get a text message of the secret meeting location. They put on their white outfits and covered it with a coat so as not to gave away the fact that they are part of this group. Plastic plates and utensils are not allow. The reason why they do this is to celebrate the city of Paris. Most were dressed very proper and others dressed silly like a bunny costume. I even saw one woman in a wedding dress. Well, she did meet the white outfit requirement. At midnight, they all hold up sparklers so it was a beautiful sight for an on-looker.
